Since 1983, he has taught and performed research at Cal Poly, and has taught classes in design, robotics, and mechanics. He has written the Introduction to Robotics (2nd Ed., John Wiley and Sons, 2011), the Creative Design of Products and Systems (John Wiley and Sons, 2009), and Engineering principles of Everyday Life for Non-Engineers (Morgan and Claypool, 2016). Ying received his B.Eng, M.S., and PhD from Southeast University, in 1985, 1988, and 1997, respectively. He is the inventor of Fireworks Algorithm (FWA). He is an IEEE senior member and a member of Emergent Technologies Technical Committee (ETTC) of IEEE Computational Intelligence Society since 2010. Ying is the founder general chair of the ICSI International Conference series. He won the 2nd-Class Natural Science Award of China in 2009.
